I am an artist, tinkerer and designer. Here you'll find an intimate look at what inspires my work and piques my curiosity.

Creating Visual Art along with music September 16, 2011

There are two ways I create, one is on a deadline and the other is free form with no particular purpose.   I have learned over time that the sounds around me make a difference to how successful I am at both of these.   I usually have the radio playing or my IPOD is playing.

When I am on a deadline, meaning I need to finish some artworks for a show, then I listen to NPR.  I know, talk radio?   It keeps me grounded, and is calm enough to keep me on task and helps me be more methodical.   Of course it does have its risks, sometimes the program is so interesting, that you stop working to listen.  If I am worried about that then it time to listen to either slow jazz or Classical music.     I often wonder how many people use music or sound to motivate and influence their work.   I will tend to get scattered and forget stuff if I am trying to hurry, so slowing down and paying more attention works for me.

Now when I am just playing around and experimenting, which I wish happened more often, is when I play music.   Anything will do but the more up tempo the better.   Recently one of my new favorite songs in Rolling in the Deep by Adele.  That girl can SING!  The up temp music gets me in a groove that says, no rules!  Do what you want, it is all good.   I will admit, that sometimes this creative jaunt involves dancing around, sometimes just chair dancin’ but other times, it is full on spinnin’ around the room!

I have often thought that I should just name my artworks after whatever I was listening to when they were created.    Some would have names like, Radio Lab or Wait, Wait don’t tell me or Jar of Hearts, I found a boy or Revival.   Now that would give them more punch and probably cause quite the conversation to ensue when explaining the names.  What kind of Music do you listen to when your feeling creative?

Now for some craftivity!

Have you ever etched on Metal?  Me either.  But, I found this video by the ever wonderful Sherri Haab on how to etch metal.  I know people who have done the etching, using their own calligraphy as the base and copying it to create the template for etching.   It is definitely on my list of to do’s.

If you like to watch artist as they create, this is a great video I found.  He is creating a filigree bracelet to music and I could not stop watching.

Finding the Light and How DO you hang art on the wall? September 11, 2011

To send light into the darkness of mens hearts – such is the duty of artists: Robert A Schumann

As an artist I am always challenged with finding the light, I want to get the reflection, the shine, the warmth and the heart into each of my artworks.   When I have worked on a sheet of copper for some time and I finally get to the point where I want it, it is truly my happy place.   It gives me great joy, to lay it down gently, and spray it with sealer to try to hold onto some of the light and warmth the flame has imparted to the carved and hammered work, that has been transformed from a blank sheet of copper.

The next challenge is to make sure it gets mounted in the best way to make it shine.   Lately, I have let my copper wrap around a base to give the spotlight to only the copper and to show how well it warms against any surface.   I have also mounted copper onto a black background, which makes the color pop!

I have yet to figure out how I want to mix my copper with Glass but I am sure that reality will present itself when it is ready.   Then I will move forward on another adventure in trying to capture light, feeling and warmth…  You can view my artworks on Etsy and see them in person at the Odgepodge Art Gallery, in Sherwood Oregon.

Do you have art you want to hang but are not sure how to hang it?   Here is a video that gives you instructions on how to hang on different types of walls and using different types of hangers.  Enjoy!

Back from my travels and are the Holly-Daze as close as I think? September 1, 2011

I am back in the home saddle so to speak.   It has been a whirlwind of activity as I prepared for the Vancouver Wine & Jazz Festival artist booth.   I also had to get the lovely daughter off to college out of state.   All somewhat stressful events.   It all worked out and now I need to get my artwork to the 20/40 art challenge at the Odgepodge Gallery for the annual show.     Of course I really need to take some pictures of the artwork first.   But all in time…   I trust it will all work out as one can only do so much at one time.    For some reason as we head into fall here is Oregon the Art season is heating up.   There are local shows to deliver artwork to,  soon the Art Studio tour for Yamhill and Portland will gear up and then the holidays will be in full gear after that.

I look forward to the calm that comes after the holly-daze when there is (hopefully) time to sit and think and create.    If you are already thinking about the holly-daze, I recommend starting now on the search for the perfect item for the loved one you wish to gift to.   Choose something special and unusual that you cannot find at the mall, those are gifts that can be treasured for their uniqueness.  A great place to find locally handmade is on Etsy.com or at your local art/craft shows.   You can find local shows on Festival.net.   My link is for Oregon but you can specify your state or one you’re traveling to.

If you are looking to make some or all of your gifts this year, there are so many things that everyone would enjoy.    An oldie but really good one is recipe in a jar.   Easy to make and you can do it assembly line and have it done lickety split.   There are all kinds of ideas, like soup mix, brownie mix, cake mix, muffin mix etc.   The jar just holds the dry ingredients and then you affix a label with directions like add a cup of milk and 2 eggs, etc….

Whatever you decide to do please feel free to share it here!

New works in the making… August 21, 2011

I love the hot weather it is great for flame work on copper.   I have been preparing for a couple of shows lately by creating some new works.   For the second year I am participating in a local Galleries artist challenge.  The Challenge is to create 20 8×8″ artworks in 40 days.   This is the 4th year and it keeps getting better and better.    This also the second year I will be an artist at the Vancouver (WA) Wine and Jazz Festival as well.  Both occur within a week of one another, so prep time is definitely needed.   I am so excited for the Festival, as the music is fabulous!   Al Jarreau will headline this year and that voice is timeless!  I looking forward all of the other artists as well and what works they will be bringing this year.   Although you can check all of us Artists out before hand by visiting the Artist list on the Festival website.   Many of the Artists have websites or other pages you can visit.   Wine tasting will also be on the menu and they always have a good selection of wines to taste and purchase.  They will hold your bottles for you as well until you leave so you don’t have to cart them around.   It is a great service.

Right after the Jazz Fest I will be in the 20/40 Artist Challenge show at the Odgepodge Art Gallery.  I will be one of 20 artist that are on record making art for this show and will be fabulous with all of the walls full of 8×8″ artworks in all kinds of mediums.   If you are local please come down and see the show, it will be a wonderful display and it is a great way to find original art at very reasonable prices.

I found a link to a wonderful video that the Washington County Visitors Association did of the Odgepodge Gallery during last years 20/40 show. Enjoy!

Last minute details. . . Reading material, Water and fabulous clothes July 22, 2011

Filed under: Uncategorized — SO Art Studio @ 11:14 PM

So your ready to head off for vacation or even a day trip this summer.  Or maybe you heard that the Pacific Northwest has natural air conditioning and you decided to hop a plane and get out of the hot and humid east.    No would blame you a bit!   So what do you grab on your way out the door that you can sling over your shoulder that A.  Will keep you entertained, B. Keep you hydrated on your trip  and C. Clothing that would work for cooler weather, but keep you cool on your way there?

There are few things I have run across lately  that might do it for you

a.  I would not travel without my Kindle.   I use the one that allows me to download anywhere that there is access via 3G.   I think that a lot of people don’t know that they can download books for either free or pennies along with your regular priced books.  No waiting for the book, you can buy it straight from your kindle and you have it instantly.   I do admit that I still buy how to books in hardcover, as I like to have the illustrations.  Note:  I DO recommend getting the leather cover, it will protect your kindle from damage.  If it does somehow break they will replace it, but who wants it to break when your traveling?

For Example Jane Eyre is free on kindle but the paper book of Jane Eyre is $2.83 both are  good deal, but free, cannot beat that.

Here is another one The girl who played with fire a Stieg Larsson bestseller Kindle $9.99, hardcover $14.56 +Postage, Paperback $8.47+postage.

b.   Need to keep hydrated, don’t want to purchase water at the airport?   Check out the Bobble   I have one of these and you can fill it from the faucet or a drinking fountain.  It has a built-in filter as the top of the bottle which makes the water out of my faucet taste much better.  Best of all the price will not break the bank and the filter is good for 300+ uses.   Now that is much greener than those bottled waters in the store that the water is housed in BPA plastic…  Here is a review from You tube.  (BTW, I don’t think the air going back in the bottle is loud at all, as the reviewer contends)

c.   Pair this (Black Chiffon dress) with this (Ethereal Black coat) and you will look fabulous, stay cool, and did I say look fabulous?

Now your ready to skip town for cooler climes!

If you cannot get to Oregon, Enjoy the Oregon Coast, all of it in 4 minutes… It is beautiful and has no expectations of you and will love your dog, and your dog will love it too.

Something from Nothing continued . . . June 15, 2011

OK, I said yesterday I would share what else I have been creating with Yarn.   Now keep in mind that I have about 6 of those large grocery tote bags (you know the one’s you get for 99cents at Whole foods that are made of recycled something or other).   Mine are full of yarn, yes I know (cry) that I should actually use them to take to the grocery store, but once they are home and emptied, somehow they get re-purposed and I wind up buying more the next time I go.  Or using the paper grocery bags.  Anywho, back to my original story, whatever that was….

I made a promise to myself that I would make something out of all of this yarn and the first installment was the dish cloths.   I liked those so much I started searching the internet to see what looked good that I could whip up.    My search made me think I MUST make scarves.  I didn’t want to make just any old scarf, crochet the straight rows add fringe, blah, blah, blech!  I wanted something with movement and color!   So I crocheted two scarves so far and they both are curly and twirly!!!

Memorial Day Weekend – Jewelry 101 Open Studio May 26, 2011

Filed under: Arts,Creativity,Jewelry,Metal Art,Sewing,Thrift,Uncategorized,Writing — SO Art Studio @ 9:10 PM

It hardly seems possible that Memorial weekend will arrive in a couple of days.   I look outside and today was all rain and dark clouds and I wonder how much rain we can take before we start growing flippers here in the Northwest.  There is one good thing about being inside and staying dry, and that is all the little fun projects we can work on and get into, instead lawn mowing and flower watering and all those other things we would normally be doing this time of year.    So many projects and usually so little time.

I have several things in the works and they run the gamut.  First there is the summer dress that has the pattern cut out and just needs to be run through the sewing machine.  Of course the sewing machine is buried under a pile of stuff that I threw into that corner when I started organizing my books.   Mind you the corner is a tiny one  so it doesn’t take a lot to clutter it up but I plan on clearing that up this weekend.

Then there are those signs I volunteered to paint and I have partially completed, those are destined to be worked on at the next artists gathering.

Then there is the jewelry ( I create and sell my jewelry and I host the Jewelry 101 Open studio the last Friday of most months).    I absolutely LOVE creating jewelry, it is a very close second to to my metal work.   I love finding components and beads, doing wire work, hammering metal using all kinds of materials.   I am really attracted to tools, and jewelry making really feeds that need.

If you were to visit my studio, some people might wonder,  why I have yards of copper tubing?

I say, Doesn’t everyone?

Well the copper tubing when hammered makes wonderful bracelets and rings, and if you apply heat, well beautiful things happen.  Things like reds, and blues and pinks and browns that really make the copper pop.

Now don’t everyone go get that copper tubing off the connects to your ice maker on your fridge, you can pick some up at the hardware store.   Don’t worry if they give you funny looks or even if they ask you why you need so much.   But I bet while you wait you will find other items at the hardware store that make cool jewelry.   It just depends on how adventurous you are.

I am still experimenting with clear plastic tubing and what you could fill it with to make snappy bracelets or necklaces or even a hair band.  I admit that last bit about the hair band came to me just now.  You could fill the tubing with beads or glitter or fabric and the cork up the ends and attach a elastic  to either the corks or to the tubing itself and Wha-La a new head band to hold you hair back!   Or if the tubing was very small you could pop holes through it and attach beads on headpins and have danglies that hang from the tubing.

You could even run a ribbon through it to tie in the back of your neck for a necklace.

Maybe it should really be, so many idea’s and so little time. . .

Peace.

Copper Cinders April 23, 2011

This artwork in named Cinders.  It seemed an appropriate name for this artwork once it was completed.   It is one of my favorite pieces.  On this one there was a bit of hammering on the sides after I carved in the clamshell type design.  I do this all free hand and decided that I wanted a somewhat similar design both of the long sides.  I did this with the entire sheet of copper laying flat.  This way, I can create a whole design for a wrapped artwork.  So once it was hammered in, then I worked on the middle to create a design that would flow and reflect light.   I try to make all of my copper pieces reflect as much light as possible.  Sometimes the metal itself can be reflective but having a surface that has texture ,will really make the light play on the artwork.    As you can see from the photos posted here, the light has played a little game with this, just due to the fact that the photo was taken in the same daylight, but using a different angle.  This reflective quality is what makes me keep working in this medium.   Once you add flame to the metal it also adds a whole new spectrum of color.  I hope you enjoy this artwork.  Comment if you have questions or comments… Peace.Cinders FrontCinders

Fired Metal! April 12, 2011

My friend and fellow artist, Darla Boljat, took some wonderful pictures of my art for me.   She is a good photographer and takes all of her pictures outdoors in natural light.   I like that!   So, I thought I would start to share some of my Fired metal.  AKA Copper Repousse’.   I make my creations out of sheet copper.   I carve them use a myriad of tools (ask anyone, I am a tool addict) and I hammer them with various sizes & types of hammers.

I really like the rocky hammered look so you will see that a lot.

Once I feel I have beaten the heck out of the copper and scribbled all over it, (like a kid with crayons when Mom as gone to check the mailbox), then I am ready to light my torch and get down to business.

I use a somewhat slow process of heating up the metal, then re heating and moving over it to draw out as much color as it will give me.   At some point I am generally satisfied, (ok! I have been known to squeal and twirl a bit),  I then I let it rest for a bit before I seal it with a Metal Sealer.   Once it has dried then it is time to wrap and nail it to its base.

I sign it and sometimes give it a name and if I really like it I will hang it in my house for a while, before it is time to find it a new home.   Kind of like Puppies, you cannot keep them all or soon you will be overun!

So here are some pictures of my work…Peace
