Remember when I was talking about making more glass in the kiln? Well I have been busy making new ones and I wish you could feel the glass in your hands and see it in the light, it has such internal texture. Just lately I have been working on a new line of pendants. Using Glass and copper and sometimes sterling silver, I am creating pendants that carry light. At least that is how I think of it. Carrying light means that they are somewhat translucent and have great color and that they light me up when I look at them… LOL! Of course they feature all of my favorite colors! I have a scrumptious red orange, beautiful blue greens and some trippy black and whites. Today I toasted some glass that looks just like warm butterscotch to me… not the store kind but the homemade butterscotch… it is just so warm and yummy that it made me hungry just taking it out of the kiln.
I am make my own bails for some of the pendants, and really enjoying the process. The copper ones so far are my favorites, and I found a great chain to hang them from. You can see what I have available on my website at https://www.sharonorelladesigns.com/
I am still adjusting my photos to remove the SO Art Studio name, as I have decided to simplify my little handmade business by changing over to Sharon Orella Designs for my jewelry creations. I will continue to make my copper artworks, but am really enjoy improving my jewelry bench skills. So coming soon, I will gear up my website to showcase my jewelry and continue making some lovely new items. I also have begun moving some of my jewelry onto Artfire as they have a great google search engine submission and they feed Amazon as well. I will still be on Etsy but it is nice to be in few places for folks to find me.
Have you always found it difficult at best to find jewelry that is large enough? This has been a struggle for me my entire life. I love to wear bracelets and necklaces and earrings etc… but every time I have seen something, that I thought was beautiful and would love to have, it has been the same story over and over. I try the bangle bracelets (I would love to wear an armful of them) and I cannot get them over my hand (ok, I cannot get them past my knuckles!) I have a size 8 wrist and the widest part of the hand is over 9 inches. I would love to say, oh I can lose weight and it all will fit, but it is just not true. I had the same size when I weighed 130 lbs…. I am over 5′ 10″ inches tall with a size 11 foot and even at 135 I wore a size 14-16 pant (I am quite a bit more that that now, but you get the picture, right?). That jewelry never actually ever fit me. I always had to add extenders to necklaces and bracelets, and was limited to certain styles. I did get fed up and started making my own jewelry, and I love making it! Who hasn’t said, I wish I had known this then. Yes, I make jewelry in larger sizes… because if you want to know a secret that is not talked about much? It is this….
If you are larger you can wear bolder, more dramatic and more beautiful jewelry!
In fact the larger you are, in height or weight, it doesn’t matter, wearing small petite jewelry just gets lost on you. I am not saying that you have to wear big bright colors and chunky fruit jewelry, of course not that would be ridiculous… But, you CAN wear layers of jewelry and larger pendants, and great chunky bracelets and bold earrings. In fact, I am saying you can wear some amazing stuff that smaller women (tiny & thin), just cannot carry off. There is nothing more sexy, than a buxom bosom layered with beautiful chains and a great pendant and if your tall like me and maybe not so much a buxom bosom woman, then the you can carry the long length superbly. I really want to encourage every large size woman to invest in great jewelry, to complete your look. You will look more put together and as beautiful as you truly are!
Of course here is my shameless plug… I always make my jewelry available locally and post more and more of it in my Etsy shop. Here are some examples…
Copper and Silver bracelets, layered together make for a very sophisticated look and because of the links they can twist around you wrist and always look good. Stay tuned, I have more to say on this passion of mine, and I will be sharing more styles of jewelry very soon…
Well there is one really good thing about the warm days we have had in the Pacific Northwest, besides that wonderful sun and heavenly warmth! It means I have been able to dip my toe into the Copper creation pool earlier than normal. Yes, I broke out the torch, set up the table and firing easel and went to town on these bits of copper… each one is only 6″x6″ but grouped they are wonderful, if I do say so myself… Only one is up in my shop so far, but the rest will be there soon… Here is a preview…
I was perusing jewelry on Etsy as I am prone to do on a pretty regular basis. I love handmade, mine and that of others… I found so many yummy copper pieces that I just could not resist picking my favorites. So here is what I came up with, and I am so tempted by the copper flower earrings. In fact, I was tempted by many creations in her shop. Here is the collection, enjoy the beauties!!!
One of my latest metalworks is one I call Ghost Horse.
I don’t usually do figurative work, but I wanted to create a piece for an upcoming show, which was being held in a Horse barn (a VERY large one) and I decided to do a horse. Since my creative technique is to do my carving freehand, I knew I would need to make my hand familiar with the shape of a horse. I began by looking at and sketching different horses. After about 15 of them, I decided that I just wanted to do a head, and thought then I could do something that fit my style. I started with the head and jaw, which I carved very carefully. Then I went wild with the mane of the horse . After I fired the work, it needed contrast. That is when I decided to silver the head of the horse. When I was done, I looked at the horse and immediately thought, This is a Ghost Horse!
You can see this artwork and some of my others in my Etsy shop… SOARTSTUDIO
A couple of years back large, blingy rings, began to appear in the accessory landscape. This year, the more beads on a ring or the bigger the ring, the better. Many are wearing several quite large rings on one hand and on occasion on one finger. They make quite a statement and there are such a collection of really lovely rings, that I decided to find handmade rings, created by jewelry artists, that would be great adds to anyones accessories drawer. Talisman, what does that really mean? Good luck or Protection from something evil? Perhaps it is magical or superstitious?
In some circles it is believed to be all of those things and more. There are talismans thought to ward off disease or to make someone fall in love with you. In many cultures , perhaps all, there is something believed to bring good luck.
Years ago, it was a common to have a lucky rabbits foot on a key chain. That was one myth I always thought was misleading, because losing that foot was so unlucky for the rabbit, I thought it was sure to rub off on the keeper of the foot.
There are a whole set of talismans dedicated to what the planets represent, such as a Jupiter talisman representing wealth or Venus representing Love.
The Alkaid Talisman is purported to protect you from both spiritual and physical attack, so your covered for pretty much everything with this one.
Listed below is a Treasury of talisman jewelry designs, that whether you believe in the evil eye or not, are lovely designs all on their own.
Each image, when clicked, will lead you to the actual item on the Artist site. I implore you to check out the different views of their designs and then you can see many of the other items each artists creates.
Please feel free to share this article, comment and subscribe to the blog for more jewelry collections in the coming months.
