Okay, so maybe I just made it up but I love the look of Lucite. I was cruising through Etsy, the online Handmade marketplace, and found a lot of items labeled as Lucite. Some of which, I think, are mis- identified. My first thought is that many time people do not know what Lucite is.
Lucite is the brand name for a type of acrylic, sometimes known as plastic, but a different type, with different properties than your run of the mill Tupperware for example. Lucite has been around for only 75 years, and was quite innovative for its time. It started out destined for industrial use, where it is still is used today, but the many forms of it have expanded since then.
In the 1950′s Lucite Purses were all the rage with celebrities and the general public.
But it was the 1960′s that Lucite exploded with jewelry and hats and shoes and handbags.
Trifari Jewelry was very popular in the 1960′s an there are many shops on Etsy and Ebay where you can pick up Vintage Trifari today. Here are just a few I found; Click on the photo to find the item.
Lucite fell a bit out of favor in the 1980′s but has slowly had a resurgence as new generations discover the beauty of Lucite and collect the Vintage pieces.
However, Lucite jewelry is still being made today. Lucite has a wonderful ability to bend light and the best Lucite let the light shine through, and although not transparent, gives a lovely glow.
I encourage you to take a look at Lucite and decide for yourself.
How much Lucite do you already have? Have you found a style that you love? Share it please, I would love to go take a look!
